How many sets does Wimbledon play?
If you are asking how many sets Wimbledon matches use, the answer depends on the event: men's singles is best of 5, while women's singles and doubles are best of 3. The same singles format applies across all four Grand Slams.
A set goes to the first player to win 6 games by 2. At 6-6, the set uses a first-to-7 tiebreak, won by 2. Since 2022, all four majors use the same 10-point tiebreak at 6-6 in the deciding set.
The majors differ by surface, not by the current final-set rule: the Australian Open and US Open are hard courts, the French Open is clay, and Wimbledon is grass. The 2010 Isner-Mahut match, which ended 70-68 in the fifth set after 11 hours 5 minutes over three days, helps explain why the rules changed.
Sets required = best of 5 for men's singles; best of 3 for women's singles and doubles Game scoring is 15, 30, 40, game. At 40-40, the score is deuce; a player must win two consecutive points, with the intervening point called advantage. Before 2022, the majors had different final-set rules: the US Open used a 7-point tiebreak at 6-6 from 1970, Wimbledon introduced one at 12-12 in 2019, the Australian Open used a 10-point tiebreak at 6-6 from 2019, and the French Open had no final-set tiebreak until 2022.
