How many sets in a tennis match depends on the event, but it comes down to two numbers. Best of three is the default — first player to two sets wins. Men's singles at the four Grand Slams is best of five, so you need three.

Best of three or best of five: how many sets in a tennis match

Best of three covers almost everything you'll play or watch: ATP and WTA tour singles, all women's Grand Slam singles, doubles at every level, college and junior events, USTA leagues, and the match you booked for Saturday morning.

Best of five now survives in one corner of the pro game — men's singles at the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Everything else that used to run long has been trimmed back. Davis Cup singles moved to best of three when the competition was overhauled in 2019. The Olympic men's singles final was best of five through Rio 2016 and best of three from Tokyo onward. Wimbledon was the last major playing best-of-five men's doubles, and it switched to best of three in 2023.

Points build a game, games build a set, sets build the match, and each layer needs its own margin before it closes. That margin is where the confusion lives: at the set level, "first to six" is only half the rule. How to win a set in tennis: the seven scorelines that count

You win a set by winning six games with a two-game margin. Miss the margin at six and the set keeps going. Under standard tiebreak-set rules there are exactly seven ways a set can end:

• 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 — six games, two clear, done.
• 7-5 — the score reached 5-5, so six wasn't enough and the winner needed seven.
• 7-6 — the score reached 6-6 and a tiebreak settled it.

Nothing else is a legal set score. Not 8-6, not 6-5, not 5-3.

The tiebreak at 6-6 is scored 1, 2, 3 up to seven points, win by two, and it counts as one game in the set. That's why the set reads 7-6 rather than 6-6 with an asterisk. The number in parentheses — 7-6(4) — is the loser's point total in the tiebreak, so that one finished 7-4.

Why 6-5 isn't a set

At 6-5 the leader has six games but only a one-game cushion, so the margin rule hasn't been met and play continues. Two things can happen from there: the leader takes the next game for 7-5, or the trailer holds for 6-6 and a tiebreak. It's the same logic as the score after deuce, one level up — hitting the target number isn't enough by itself.

How many games in a tennis set — and in a whole match

A tiebreak set runs a minimum of six games and a maximum of thirteen, counting the tiebreak as a game. Multiply that out and every format has hard floors and ceilings:

Those are limits, not forecasts. A best-of-three that goes 6-2, 6-3 is 17 games and you're off the court; the same format at 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 is 39.

Sizing a match before you book the court

Games, not sets, are the number worth planning around. Two tiebreak sets can't exceed 26 games, and a third full set adds up to 13 more — which is why leagues and club ladders built around fixed court times usually swap the third set for a 10-point match tiebreak.

Tracking it mid-match is the other half of the problem: which sets are already banked, what the game count is right now, who served first. When a set doesn't stop at 7-6

The seven-scoreline list assumes tiebreak sets. The ITF rulebook still sanctions the advantage set, where there's no tiebreak at 6-6 and the set runs until someone leads by two. That's how 8-6, 12-10, and far longer scorelines become legal.

The extreme case is on the record: John Isner beat Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth at Wimbledon in 2010, 183 games across 11 hours 5 minutes and three days. The majors have since closed that door — since 2022 all four play a 10-point tiebreak at 6-6 in the deciding set, so a Grand Slam set now tops out at 7-6 like every other set. Advantage sets survive mainly in club rules and older local formats, and they're supposed to be announced before the first serve.

Shorter formats you'll meet at clubs and leagues

• Match tiebreak instead of a third set. At one set all, a single tiebreak to 10 points, win by two, decides the match. Standard in tour doubles and USTA league play.
• Short sets. First to four games, win by two, with a tiebreak at 4-4. Nine games maximum per set.
• Eight-game pro set. One long set to eight games, win by two, tiebreak at 8-8 — a whole match in a single block.
• No-ad scoring. At deuce the next point decides the game, with the receiver choosing which side to take it on. Usually paired with one of the formats above.

The ITF rules require the format to be announced in advance, including whether the final set is a tiebreak set or an advantage set. Ask at sign-in rather than at 6-6.
