Tennis court surfaces explained: what each one is made of and how it plays

Tennis court surfaces fall into three families — hard (acrylic over asphalt or concrete), clay, and grass — plus carpet and artificial grass at club level. What sits under the ball decides how high it kicks, how fast it comes off the bounce, and whether you can slide.

What a tennis court is made of, layer by layer

The ITF classifies courts twice over: by material and by speed. Its material list runs longer than three — acrylic, clay, artificial clay, grass, artificial grass, carpet, asphalt and concrete all appear — but the types of tennis courts you'll actually book or watch come down to the big three.

Speed is rated separately, based on how much a ball slows and how high it sits up on impact. Courts are sorted into five bands, from Category 1 (slow) to Category 5 (fast). Clay usually lands in the slow bands, grass in the fast ones, hard courts anywhere between depending on how they were finished. The same framework decides which ball is legal: Type 1 (fast) balls for slow courts, Type 3 (slow) balls — slightly larger in diameter — for fast ones, Type 2 for medium-paced surfaces.

Layout never changes with material: singles and doubles court dimensions and line markings are identical on every surface. Only the build-up beneath differs.

Hard court tennis: acrylic over asphalt or concrete

A hard court is pavement with a paint system on it. The base is asphalt or concrete — concrete costs more and cracks less, asphalt is cheaper and follows ground movement more readily. Over it go several thin coats of acrylic resin loaded with silica sand, then the color coats and the lines.

The sand is the part that matters for play. More of it, or a coarser grit, means more friction, a slower court and a ball that grabs and sits up. Cushioned systems add rubber granules between the slab and the acrylic; they're easier on joints and usually a shade slower. That's why "hard court" isn't one speed — two courts built from the same product can rate a band apart on sand loading and wear alone. The Australian Open alone has cycled through three different suppliers since the 1980s — Rebound Ace, then Plexicushion, now GreenSet — while the US Open has stuck with the same DecoTurf/Laykold system since 1978.

The payoff is predictability: bounce is high and repeatable, the same shot landing at the same height on day one and day ten. Hard court tennis is also the least forgiving on the body — there's no give in a slab, and stopping means stopping.

Clay courts: crushed brick over a compacted base

Red clay is neither clay in the geological sense nor deep. A European clay court is built in layers — a drainage bed of coarse stone, finer aggregate above it, a compacted layer of crushed limestone several centimeters thick, and finally a top dressing of crushed red brick only a millimeter or two deep. That thin skin of brick dust is what you slide on, and what has to be brushed, watered and topped up constantly.

American green clay, sold most commonly as Har-Tru, swaps the brick for crushed metabasalt, a hard grey-green rock. It plays firmer and a touch faster than European red clay and sheds water differently, but the principle is identical: a loose granular layer over a compacted base.

Clay grabs the ball. Friction strips horizontal speed and returns it as height, so the ball sits up and heavy topspin becomes a weapon rather than a rally-starter. Clay is also the only surface that records the bounce — where lines are still judged by eye, the ball mark is the evidence, though more events now use electronic line calling on clay too. Lines themselves are usually plastic tape pinned beneath the surface, which is why a ball clipping one can skid oddly.

Grass court tennis: ryegrass over rolled loam

Wimbledon's courts are sown with 100% perennial ryegrass and cut to 8mm for the Championships, growing on a heavy loam soil rolled firm before play. The grass is the visible half of the story; the compaction underneath does most of the work. A soft, wet, under-rolled lawn plays slow and dead. A dry, firm one is the fastest surface in the sport.

Grass court tennis rewards anyone who takes time away from an opponent. The blades flatten under the ball, so it skids through low and stays low, and slice barely gets off the ground. Bounce is the lowest of any surface and the least consistent: by the second week of a grass event the baselines are worn to bare earth, and the ball behaves like it's landing on packed dirt.

Wimbledon plays on grass because that's what lawn tennis originally was — a game codified in the 1870s for croquet lawns, and every major except Roland-Garros began on turf. The US Open left grass in 1975, the Australian Open after its 1987 edition; Wimbledon didn't. The season stays short, roughly five weeks, because a court played on for two weeks needs months to recover.

Carpet and artificial grass

Carpet is a textile or polymeric surface laid in rolls or tiles over a hard floor, almost always indoors. It's fast, low-bouncing and quick to lay and lift, which made it the indoor standard for decades. The main tours moved away from it around 2009, but it survives in clubs and smaller events.

Artificial grass is synthetic fiber with sand brushed into the pile — common at clubs in wet climates because it drains and plays through winter. Depending on pile height and sand depth it imitates either a slow grass court or a loose hard court, and allows a small controlled slide. Artificial clay is the same build with brick dust as the infill.

How tennis court surfaces change bounce, speed and rally length

Two effects move together: how much horizontal speed the surface removes, and how much of it comes back as height. Clay takes a lot and returns a lot. Grass takes little and returns little. Hard sits between them with the steadiest bounce of the three.

The clay court vs hard court contrast is the one players feel first. On clay you slide into a ball you'd have to sprint and brake for on acrylic, so fewer shots are outright unreturnable — points run longer, serve is a smaller edge, breaks come more often, and the same 6–4 6–4 scoreline eats far more clock than it would on grass. Which tour events use which surface

The four majors split three ways: the Australian Open and US Open on acrylic hard courts, Roland-Garros on red clay, Wimbledon on grass. The calendar is shaped around them — hard-court blocks at each end of the year, a European clay swing through spring into Roland-Garros, a compressed grass run into Wimbledon, then hard courts again into the US Open and the indoor season.

Two wrinkles. The American clay events at Houston and Charleston use green clay, not red, so a player arriving from Europe gets a firmer, faster version of the same idea. And altitude matters: clay in Madrid plays quicker than clay in Rome because thinner air does less to slow the ball, though the courts are built the same way.

Can you play on grass all year?

Not on natural turf in most climates. Grass needs recovery time, doesn't tolerate heavy use or standing water, and stops growing in cold months — which is why the pro grass season lasts weeks, not months.
